457 vs 482 Visa, How Are They Different?
Employers in Australia and abroad who are unable to find suitable candidates in the local market can sponsor skilled overseas workers under a temporary visa or the subclass 457 and 482 visa program, which is usually done through a standard business sponsorship arrangement or an Australian corporate sponsorship. This necessitates the employer to file a request with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

An employer can also draw out a labor agreement with the Australian government to allow for the hiring of foreign workers. These are typically employed in unique labor market situations that aren’t covered by normal corporate sponsorship agreements. A labor agreement is the only option for migrant employees in areas like meat processing and on-hire.
Application stages
Sponsorship: The employer must submit an application as a conventional business sponsor and nominate a professional for a 457 visa.
Nomination: An occupation is suggested by an employer for a prospective or current 457 visa holder. They can submit this nomination at the same time as their usual business sponsor application.
Application for a visa: A 457 visa is applied for by the skilled worker who is chosen for the nominated occupation.
482 Visa
The Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482), also known as the “TSS visa,” is a work visa that permits an Australian firm to sponsor someone from another country to work for them in Australia. This work visa was first introduced on March 19, 2019. It took the place of the DHA-abolished Temporary Work visa subclass 457. You may be eligible for the TSS visa if you have the skills to fill a job opportunity with an Australian firm that is looking to hire you.
The TSS visa is divided into three (3) categories:
- The stream of the short-term
- The stream for the medium-term
- Stream of the Labour Agreement
Refer to the Consolidated Skilled Occupations list to find the stream that relates to you. If your occupation qualifies you for the short-term stream, your TSS visa will be authorized for a maximum of two (2) years. If your occupation qualifies you for the medium-term stream, your TSS visa will be authorized for a maximum of four (4) years.
What’s the Difference Between Working Visa Subclasses 457 and 482?
1. There are two types of 482 visas.
The new 482 visas are divided into two categories: short-term visas and medium-term visas. Short-term visas are good for two years, whereas medium-term visas are valid for four years. However, because each stream has a list of approved occupations, an applicant cannot simply choose which stream to enter. For example, a Marketing Specialist is only eligible for the short-term stream and can only apply for a two-year working visa.
2. Only a few professions are eligible.
A 482 visa is only valid for occupations on the Skilled Occupation List. These are jobs that are in high demand in Australia, with the most in-demand jobs appearing on the medium-term list. Furthermore, to apply for various employment, you must meet certain qualifications. This can involve having the necessary postsecondary education or working in the field for a particular amount of years.
3. LMT (Labour Market Testing) is required.
Employers who want to sponsor a worker on a 482 visa must show the Department of Home Affairs that there are no qualified Australian workers who can fill the position. For a period of four weeks, you can do LMT by placing job adverts on two certified sites (for example, www.seek.com.au). The sponsor must then submit a list of applicants as well as reasons for their rejection.
4. English language requirements that are more stringent
The 482 visa criteria are considerably stringent than the stricter English language standards that have been in place for a few years. To be eligible for the visa, a person must be sufficiently proficient in English. Furthermore, all applicants must take the test (regardless of their income). Only those who are from one of the English-speaking nations named in the statute, or who ask for an exemption through a labor agreement, are now exempt.
5. It can only be renewed once (onshore)
Previously, 457 visa holders could reapply for their visa and have it renewed for another four years. On the other hand, the 482 visas can only be used twice onshore. This means that if you’ve already used the visa twice, you won’t be able to do so again. As a result, the process of becoming a citizen for visa holders is more onerous. You can apply for a third visa outside of Australia, but your employer must be able to demonstrate that you have a real need to stay in Australia.
6. Price
The overall price of the visa is one of the most significant changes. Although the nomination and visa applications are filed together, there is a separate fee for each. The short-term stream application fee is $1,175, while the long-term stream application charge is $2,455. Other expenditures, such as health and police checks, the nomination fee, and legal fees, are not included.
