The Skilled Independent Subclass 189 visa is a permanent General Skilled Migration visa which does not require sponsorship by a State/Territory Government or relative in Australia. The Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa allows skilled people to migrate to Australia permanently.
What is a Subclass 189 Visa?
The 189 visa is a skilled visa for applicants that are not sponsored by an employer, and aimed at applying for their own skilled independent permanent residence visa. This visa is points tested and invited. A holder of a 189 visa is free to live and work anywhere in Australia.
The 190 visa is a skilled and invited visa for applicants but these are sponsored by a state or territory government, intended for applying for a permanent residence visa. Subclass 190 visas are State Sponsored Visa and a holder of a 190 visa signs an undertaking to reside in the sponsoring state or territory for the first 2 years after taking up residence.

Applicants required a minimum 65 points to secure an invitation in the December 2022 round. Some of the more popular occupations such as Accountant, Civil Engineer and Computer Network Engineer required 85 points

Requirements for 189 Visa
In order to qualify for a Subclass 189 visa, you would need to:
- Make sure your occupation is on the Medium- and Long-Term Skilled Occupation List
- Meet the pass mark in the skilled migration points test
- Be aged between 18 and 44 inclusive
- Obtain a positive Skills Assessment from the relevant assessing authority
- Have Competent English or higher
- Meet the health and character requirements
- Lodge an EOI and be invited to apply
People can’t apply for the Skilled Independent (subclass 189) visa in New Zealand right now. From 1 July 2023, people can’t apply to immigrate to New Zealand through this stream anymore. This means you cannot apply for a New Zealand stream again. This is to help New Zealand citizens become new Australian citizens directly. The Home Affairs Department will keep working on applications that they have already received.
Starting from July 1, 2023, New Zealand citizens in Australia who qualify can apply for Australian citizenship easily. They don’t have to get a permanent residence visa at the beginning.
If you applied to live in New Zealand and your family members have a special visa, you might want to think about cancelling your application. They can decide to wait until July 1, 2023, to apply for becoming an Australian citizen if they are a New Zealand citizen. This is a new way of getting citizenship directly.
The fee to apply to become a citizen is less expensive than the fee for the second Visa Application. Before getting a visa for New Zealand, you must pay the second Visa Application Charge.
